Dave Thompson’s Organic Healthy Grow® Teams Up with Hewitt’s Garden Center to Support Capital Roots
1,000 lbs. of Organic Fertilizer will Help Non-profit Community Garden Better Serve Its Local Urban Gardeners
ALBANY, N.Y. (August 22, 2016)— Dave Thompson’s Organic Healthy Grow®, maker of aerobically composted organic fertilizer, and Hewitt’s Garden Center have partnered to donate 1,000 lbs. of Healthy Grow fertilizer to Capital Roots, a community garden and urban farm located in Troy, N.Y. This donation of high quality organic fertilizer will assist Capital Roots in its mission to provide access to organic fruits, vegetables and herbs to the public.
Founded in 1975, Capital Roots grows organic produce and offers nutritional and horticultural education for all ages and skill levels. The organization’s Urban Greening Program also plants trees in order to beautify communities in Albany, Rensselaer, Schenectady and southern Saratoga County.
Other Capital Roots initiatives include The Produce Project, a year-round urban agricultural training program that provides high school students with education and access to employment opportunities. The Healthy Stores program, which works with inner-city convenience stores, helps to provide residents with access to fresh, healthy food.
“We have been a supporter of Capital Roots for many years and are thrilled to see that support echoed by one of our very generous suppliers,” said Peter Bowden, spokesperson for Hewitt’s Garden Center. Hewitt’s Garden Center is a retailer of Healthy Grow. “Healthy Grow’s contribution will allow the Capital Root’s many community gardeners to produce even more healthy, organic vegetables in their garden plots. It is a pleasure to be associated with such fantastic organizations. We would like to thank Capital Roots and Healthy Grow for working to make our community a better place.”
Healthy Grow fertilizers are made from the aerobically composted litter of healthy, egg-laying chickens at the fully sustainable Thompson family farm in Pearl City, Ill. The aerobic composting process results in high concentrations of beneficial microbes, which enrich the soil, improve moisture retention and increase nutrient uptake.
According to Healthy Grow Marketing Director Mitch Cooper, Capital Roots’ focus on organic growing practices, education and community outreach fits perfectly with Healthy Grow’s focus on sustainable agriculture and community involvement.
“Today’s donation is part of our national campaign to highlight groups and organizations that enrich communities,” Cooper said. “Organically grown produce has numerous benefits, but those who don’t have access to it never get to enjoy those benefits. We have been very impressed by Capital Roots and the work they do to bring organic produce and gardening knowledge to their community, and we believe that it’s important to recognize and support organizations that go above and beyond to serve their community.”
“For more than two decades Capital Roots has been a grateful recipient of support from Hewitt’s Garden Centers. This fertilizer donation is just one more example of their generosity and commitment to ensuring that anyone can grow their own healthy fresh food. We are so appreciative to Healthy Grow for facilitating this donation,” said Amy Klein, executive director of Capital Roots. “We manage all of our gardens and our 2.5-acre urban farm organically. The fertilizer is already being used on our farm and we look forward to providing it to our 4,000 community gardeners for their use in the 2017 growing season.”
